1 June -Every day is an occasion

Why don’t we use our best things everyday? Why do we save our favourite or more valuable and expensive possessions only for special occasions?

More often than not we try to talk ourselves out of using our best on a daily basis. Perhaps many of us have a “not enough” or poverty mentality, where we think if we use our best, we’ll use it up and we won’t have anything nice in the ‘future’. Or maybe we secretly think we don’t deserve them all the time.

We have an irrational fear of wasting a good outfit or possession on an “insignificant day”. But isn’t every day special?  We could instead say,  “Don’t save things for a special occasion, because every day of our life is a special occasion!”

We can save up new or special things for later, and never get to use them. Life passes by and we unfortunately can have the attitude far too often of, “I’ll save that for later or for a special day, and that day never happens”.

Take a look at the things in your life, the things you use every day. Are they your favourite? Are they special? Or are you surrounded constantly by the “not special” and mundane, and because of that you don’t see everyday as significant, and you don’t see yourself as special either?

That expensive perfume or aftershave you received as a gift for your birthday; your favourite china or teacups. The car or bike in the garage that rarely gets taken out for a spin. That amazing new outfit you bought months ago and haven’t worn yet. Those nice shoes.

If we look at every day as a gift from God, and that each day is special and worth celebrating, maybe we will take the good teacups or coffee mugs out and use them more often. We will drive or use our valuable “luxury” item more regularly, and we can put on our “going out” clothes when we are just around home or popping down to the shops, because we are significant and worth it, and every single day is an occasion.

Sometimes we just need to declutter so you can remember what our favourite things are. We can be surrounded by possessions that are meaningless, or we simply don’t like or appreciate anymore, or maybe we never did in the first place. Decluttering is a great reminder, as we are only left with our favourite things. And the best way to enjoy our favorite things every day, is to only own our favorite things.

Make today an occasion by treating it as special! Declutter if you need a reminder of what is actually special to you. Take out and use your grandmother’s china, the wine glasses from your wedding, or shopping spree, take the car or bike for a spin, display those sentimental photos or other items, instead of only what’s the latest trendy decor.

What are we waiting for? Why not put on your special occasion clothes, your best perfume or aftershave, light the candles, open a bottle of bubbly, and enjoy it ALL. Because every day of our life is a special occasion, and God says we are worth it!”

“For You, O LORD, have made me glad by what You have done, I will sing for joy at the works of Your hands” (Psalm 92:4)

“Celebrate God all day, every day. I mean, revel in him!” (Philippians 4:4)

“Let us rejoice today, and be glad” (Psalm 118:24)

Prayer: Thank you Lord for each day. Help me to not take a single day for granted. You have blessed me with my life, and with things no matter how big or small they are, to enjoy. Help me to not keep putting off enjoying my life for another day or occasion, when you’ve given it to me to be blessed in today. In Jesus name Amen.
