What if we decided to “Delight in Life?”
What would happen if we put our ideas, to-do’s, and opportunities through the filter of delight? If we closed our eyes, tuned our hearts and minds towards God, and asked this simple question: “Where is God in this?” “Is there joy and delight in what I am spending my time thinking and talking about?” “Is there delight in all my doing?”
Most of the time we have no idea what brings us delight. We often just live in automatic pilot, creatures of habit who do the same things day in and day out because that’s what we do. But what would happen if we stopped and started to filter our actions, thoughts and words through the filter of what has “fullness of life” in it? What has delight and God’s presence in and on it?
The bible says, “Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give the desires of your heart”. (Psalm 37:4). “He promises that He will direct our steps, and that He delights in every detail of our life” (Psalm 37:23)
God wants us to delight in Him, because ultimately He knows we will find delight in Him. But what does that mean? God is all around us. If we place and look for joy triggers in our day; things in which we delight in, we will no doubt also find and delight in God. Especially if we cultivate the attitude of gratitude, and giving thanks to God for all the delightful things we encounter throughout our day.
Using delight as our barometer goes far beyond saying yes or no to certain commitments, or the things we do each and every day. Choosing delight helps us choose uplifting conversations rather than negative ones, where we are tempted to put ourselves or others down. Delight reminds us to devote ourselves to people and projects that inspire rather than tire. It asks us to sit in the sunshine, to “smell the roses” so to speak, to make healthy life embracing choices and to live more simply. Choosing delight shifts our perspective to see God, and His hand on our life and the world.
Today choose not to just have quantity of life but quality, for the quality of our life is in proportion always to the capacity for delight.
Prayer: Help me Lord to celebrate the beauty there is all around me. To realise the power in simplicity, and the peace of your presence. You are in the very air I breath, for I am surrounded by your love. Help me to see all the things that I can find delight and joy in, rather than missing it all in my everyday habits or haste to get to where I am going. In Jesus Name Amen.
