13 June – Suck it up!

get it together

Sometimes we just have to “suck it up”. That may sound crass or even harsh but there are times in our lives, and especially when we may be facing difficult situations that this is true. If challenges and hard stuff is staring us in the face, and we are sliding into a pit of despond, that is when we need to pull ourselves together because otherwise we are probably going to end up in a big hole which we will then have to pull ourselves out of again.

Sometimes “pulling it together” means getting some help; talking to someone about how we feel, asking for people you trust to pray with you for a breakthrough, taking care of ourselves, and if necessary getting some professional help. It means going to God and casting our cares and burdens upon Him and listening to what He says. It’s searching out His Word for the answers and then holding onto and declaring those promises.

The bible says repeatedly to, “Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7 NLT)

“Give all your burdens to the Lord, and he will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.” (Psalm 55:22 NLT)

However contrary to popular culture and belief it is never beneficial in the midst of difficulties and for our mental, emotional, and spiritual health to have a pity party, melt down, or serious hissy fit. Nor is it helpful or very pleasant for those who have to live and work with us. We can express our emotions if need be, but in doing so we must be mindful to watch what we are saying because words are powerful and act as containers for our faith. We frame up our worlds by our words; God spoke the world into being by the power of His words (Hebrews 11:3), and we are made in His image with the unique and powerful gift from God of having power in our words to destroy or to build up; to create or to tear down.

It’s when we are feeling the most vulnerable and under pressure that we must not let go of our self restraint, faith and trust in God and allow ourselves to have a pity party. We do have to “suck it up” at times, to stop feeling sorry for ourselves, quit thinking we are the only ones going through a rough time and start looking at the positives, the possibilities, and what we do have available and in our hands to use and move forward with.

God cares, He actually does know what we are going through, and He has promised that He will be with us through it all. He never said it was going to always be smooth sailing, but that in actual fact we would face trials, tribulations, and things in which we must persevere through. He encourages us when we are facing difficulties to not “lose it” but instead to continue to use our faith, His word, and our trust in Him to stand, and when we’ve done all else to just keep standing, for we will overcome if we do not give up.

When we remain steadfast and keep speaking God’s word, angels are able to go to work on our behalf, and Jesus says that He Himself is the High Priest of our confession. This means when we speak and believe in agreement with the bible, Jesus is authorised to administer and carry out on our behalf of the words that we say. (Hebrews 3:1) However He is not responsible over our confessions in the midst of our hissy fits, negativity or faithless words, for He is High priest over deliverance, righteousness, and freedom; over our faith filled words, and not our feelings.

Today, give Jesus and the angels something to work with in your confession. Go back to the basics if need be and remind yourself of who Jesus is, what He has promised and who you are. Remember what is actually important in life; count your blessings, get some perspective and if need be “suck it up” and get back out there to live and fight another day.

“Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again – may Saviour and my God!” (Psalm 43:5NLT)

Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.” (Ephesians 6:13)

“Those who guard their mouths and their tongues keep themselves from calamity.” (Proverbs 21:23)

Prayer: Lord please help me when I am finding it difficult. Set a guard over my mouth so that I would not speak those things that aren’t of any benefit, especially in regard to who I am and my future. I choose to believe what you say about my life in your word, about who I am, where I’m going, and that together you and I always have a plan, a hope and a future. In Jesus name Amen.
