What does your life say about you, and what you believe?
Jesus said that when we know Him we will have His life and light within us. He actually tells us that “we are the light of the world”. That’s our primary function in the world – to be the light!
The nature of light is to bring light to the darkness. However when we live parts of our life in the dark, keeping things hidden, we’re unwilling or afraid to live lives that are transparent to others. This can cause us to make decisions in the dark which no doubt will lead to some regrettable consequence.
When we look at something in the dark, it does not look so bad; but the purpose of light is to remove darkness, point out danger, and reveal the path. The light will expose that which is not truth in our lives, and lead us away from evil and wrong decision making. But when we want to keep things secret and hidden away from others for fear of being found out, rejected, or failing it can shut down the life and the light of God working in us.
Jesus says, “I am the light of the world; he who follows Me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall have the light of life.” (John 8:12)
Jesus wants us to walk in the light, and to be the light. If we want to keep being the light in the darkness we have to be mindful to go and do, and be as Jesus is. This is why Jesus tells us to follow Him, and why we are told to be holy, staying free from the influences of evil and darkness.
Our lives can and will reflect all that Jesus is and does if we choose to live connected to Him, our power source. If we say we love Him we will obey what he asks. The further we allow ourselves to get away from Him, the dimmer our light will be. That’s why He encourages us to daily seek to stay near to Him, and to keep His words in the forefront of our hearts and minds. The closer we walk with Him the brighter we will shine in the darkness.
“For you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and trust.”(Ephesians 5:8-9)
“If you love me, keep my commandments.” (John 14:15)
“But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2:9)
Today I encourage you to start thinking of yourselves as “the light of the world.” When you do, you will be far more likely to conduct yourself as a follower of Jesus in your everyday life. So go and walk in the light today!
“You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they set it on a lampstand, and it gives light to everyone in the house“. (Matthew 5:14-15)
Prayer: Lord please show me any areas of my life that I need to bring into the light, or get rid of. Help me to live in the light and keep following you and your word today. In Jesus name Amen.
