15 February - God Whispers Because He Is Close

A guy named Elijah was having a really difficult time. He was feeling discouraged and disappointed with his life and the circumstances happening around him. He needed direction and to know what to do, so he chose to seek God. As he did, Elijah felt God say to stand on the mountain and that He would pass by him and let him know he was there with him. (1 Kings 19)

Suddenly a great wind blew up, then an earthquake, then a fire, but God was not in these things. God revealed how close he was to Elijah when he chose to speak to Elijah, not in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire but rather in a gentle whisper. He whispered because He was close to Elijah.

In life, it’s so easy to become stressed, afraid, and confused. Life can be tricky sometimes. But I think God was trying to tell us all something when he chose to speak to Elijah in such a quiet and gentle way.

He wants us to know that you don’t whisper to strangers. You whisper to those close to you. To a friend, a partner, or a child; You whisper to those you know and love.

God still whispers. He whispers amid the storm. He whispers when we don’t know what to do, and we feel confused or disappointed. He whispers when we are tired, when we are stuck in traffic, when we are facing something new. He still whispers when we have something amazing happen or we are marveling at the beautiful scenery in front of us. He whispers every day and everywhere if you will stop long enough to tune your ears and heart to hear Him speak.

Today whatever sort of week you are having I encourage you to come back to that quiet place, where you can hear a whisper and you choose to seek to hear God’s whisper to you. He loves you and wants the best for you and he’s not going to shout or be loud and forceful. He’ll lead you and reveal himself most often by that still small voice and by his gentle whispers.

“After the earthquake came the fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.” (1 Kings 19:12 NIV)

“For the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel has said this, “In returning [to Me] and rest you shall be saved, In quietness and confident trust is your strength.” (Isaiah 30:15 AMP)

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27)

Prayer: Lord, thank you that you know everything that is going on in my world today and what my future holds. Please help me to quiet my heart and mind so that I can hear your whisper and that you will heal and calm my heart where it may be hurting or confused and continue to lead me on the way to go. In Jesus' name Amen.
