15 July – Remember who you are! (Broken to whole Pt 7)

remember who you are

Who do you say you are? Do you ever spend time wondering who you really are? Wondering if you are a good enough person, wife, husband, mother, father, son, daughter, employee, boss, or friend. Wondering if you are worthy, forgiven, and loved by God? Wondering if you measure up in any area of your life at all? Wondering if you are too broken to be made whole?

The fact is that we do matter, and that we matter to God very much. Everyday He sees us, and is thinking of ways to bless and shower His love upon us. He knows our thoughts, our comings and goings, our struggles, our good moments and our bad. (Psalm 139)

But we also have an adversary the devil who is constantly trying to whisper lies to us, always trying to make us wonder if we are good enough, if we are forgiven, if we are loved, and whether our life counts. His whole aim is to get us to believe these lies and then to live them out in our daily lives, so that we will distance ourselves from God’s love and from those around us. He tries to make us forget who we really are!

Nehemiah in the bible is a model for remembering who we are, and how to successfully rebuild after brokenness and loss. Nehemiah rebuilt the walls of Jerusalem after they had been broken and in disrepair for years as he rallied the people around him to remember who they were, and more importantly whom they belonged to. As the people remembered  they were able to overcome their challenges, their enemies and succeed in their purpose. (Nehemiah Chapters 1-4)

Today you also may have areas of your life where the enemy has broken in and broken down your defences and self worth, as he successfully attacked how you see yourself. Perhaps you have been listening to his lies as he’s attempted to make you forget who you are, and that God sees and loves you.

But today you can make a choice whether you will believe the lies of the devil or believe what God says about you.

We all get to choose whether we will know and remember who we truly are. That we are loved by God; that when we come to Him and ask for forgiveness He freely grants it, that we are fearfully and wonderfully made, and that we are part of His family, with a hope and a future.

If you have been living the lie, too discouraged to believe how much God loves you, or too ashamed to accept God’s gift of grace, let today be the day you look in the mirror and see the amazing, wonderfully made, forgiven person whom God created to know and experience His love, and for a purpose.

Don’t go through any more days ignorant of who you are, but today remember who you are and whose name you carry, and then send that devil packing. (James 4:7)

John 1:12 says, “But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.”

“He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will.” (Ephesians 15)

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. “(1 Peter 2:9)

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! “(1 John 3:1)

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7)

Prayer: Lord thank you that you see and know all about me. I don’t want to live ignorant of who I am anymore, but to know and remember everyday how loved, forgiven and blessed I am in you. I refuse to listen to any more of the devil’s lies that I am not good enough and that my life doesn’t matter. I’m closing the door on him today. In Jesus name Amen.
