17 Jan -When to hold, when to fold

You’ve got to know when to hold ’em. Know when to fold ’em Know when to walk away….its the words of a Kenny Rodgers song my Dad used to sing and there is some wisdom in the words that actually go beyond a card game.

Those who are wise have learnt to know what to hold fast to and what to release, while those who choose foolishness choose instead to hold onto those things which can cause them loss and grief. They hold onto disappointments and often release that which would have brought life.

In contrast the wise hold onto the promises of God and let go of the things that would rob and frustrate their life. They let go of disappointments, jealousy, bitterness, un-forgiveness, pain, fear, doubt, anxiety and the past.

Yet how often do we choose to hold onto the past or bitterness and offense and in doing so let go of the very things we should hold such as God promises, who He says we are, and His love, acceptance, forgiveness and plan for our lives.

We would be better to seek God to know when to hold on and stand fast for that which God says is our’s and when to let go – “to fold em” and release things from our efforts of control.

As Lisa Bevere wisely says, “You go as far as your power allows, and if nothing changes, you have no choice but to let go. You bless and move on. You exchange frustration for release. You release what is in your hand so He can release what is in His”.

God promises wisdom to those who seek and ask Him. The closer we are to Him and His ways the deeper our understanding of how life works and how we can live freely and lightly.

For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding: He stores up sound wisdom for the upright. (Proverbs 2:6-7 KJV)

Today I encourage you to let go of those things that don’t generate life, health and growth. Release disappointment, anger, bitterness, and offense and anything that steals from the life God has for you. Instead focus on, seek after and hold onto God’s promises, who He says you are and His plan for your future. Learn what you can change and what you can’t and what to “hold and what to fold”…

If you need wisdom – if you want to know what God wants you to do -ask him, and he will gladly tell you. He will not resent your asking. But when you ask him, be sure that you really expect him to answer, for a doubtful mind is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.” ( James 1:5-6 NLT)

Prayer: Lord I ask for wisdom to know what to hold and what to fold in my life and that I would focus of those things and relationships that generate life and health. In Jesus name amen.
