Today was one of those days that threatened not to turn out well, but when we find ourselves in the middle of one of these days, there are some things we can do to ease the feelings and effects of a "bad day and to gain perspective."
Here are some ideas of what to do when you're having a bad day.
1. Go and do something fun and preferably active, out in the great outdoors. Fresh air and some form of exercise are known mood lifters.
2. Be around others. It may be the last thing we feel like doing, but being around the people we like and love helps return perspective. If we can't be with them, then video calling or some other way of communicating also works.
3. Eat something you like. There is a reason why some things are called "comfort foods". They make us feel good and remind us of a better day. A good tip is to try and find a healthy recipe or alternative so that you don't kick yourself later. Plus, have a small portion, so you don't have binge regret after consuming a whole pavlova or large block of chocolate all by yourself.
4. Watch a favourite movie, show, or be around someone who makes you laugh! Laughter or just smiling is like medicine. It's good for our minds, hearts and souls.
"A cheerful disposition is good for your health; gloom and doom leave you bone-tired." (Proverbs 17:22)
5. Cast all your cares upon Jesus. There is no point carrying around the cares and worries of a "bad or disappointing day". It will just prolong the day's ability to steal our joy. Talk to God, hand over your cares and seek Him for wisdom as to what to do next. Then let Him carry you the rest of the day.
"Cast your cares upon Jesus for He cares for you". (1 Peter 5:7)
"
If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you." (James 1:5)
5. Dream. Spend some time imagining a better day and visualising how you would like things to be. Dreaming helps activate our faith, and when we start to see better things ahead, we begin to believe for them.
God says He will "do immeasurably more than we can ask, think, dream or possibly imagine". (Ephesians 3:20)
6. Give thanks. Be thankful for what you have and ask God to help you count your blessings. A grateful heart lifts our spirits and gives us the strength to fight another day.
Today if you're having a "horrible or disappointing day, or you know what it's like to experience one, remember it's just one day, and it doesn't have to define the rest of your week or life. We all have less than spectacular days setbacks. However, we are not alone and when God is for us, who can stand against us. He promises to perfect everything that concerns us and will work all things together for our good in the long run. (Romans 8:28; 31)
If you get to the end of your day and it still looks and feels horrible after trying all these things, I recommend calling it a day, putting your pj's on, handing it all over to Jesus, and going to bed to get a decent night's sleep. God's mercies are new every morning, and tomorrow is a brand new day full of possibilities and potential.
Hold on, because tomorrow is going to be a great day!
"The LORD'S loving kindnesses indeed never cease, For His compassions never fails. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness." (Lamentations 3:22-23)
"I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living. Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD." (Psalm 27:13)
Prayer: Lord, thank you that you are still in control even when I'm having a horrible day or suffer disappointment. Please help me keep perspective and find things to be thankful for today as I keep believing for better things ahead. In Jesus name Amen.
