27 Sept – When You Are Tired

lift up hands

While on my run this morning I started to feeling tired about a kilometre from our home. I’ve learnt that when I begin to feel like this and my legs are protesting the best thing I can do is focus on having a stronger arm action as I run.  You’d think it would be your legs that need to be focused on, but when I concentrate on having good strong arms as I run, my legs follow suit and I start running stronger and get to where I am going quicker.

This got me thinking that life is much the same. We can all get tired and lose our resolve, drive and confidence to stay the course. Which is perhaps why God says to, “strengthen the hands which hang down and the feeble knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated, but rather be healed.” (Hebrews 12:12-13 NLT)

Moses in the bible demonstrated how this strengthening of our hands and arms helps us to win. In Moses continually lifting up his hands to heaven the battle that was being fought was turned in the Israelites favour. As long as Moses held up the staff in his hand, the Israelites had the advantage. But whenever he dropped his hand the enemy gained the advantage. Moses’ arms soon became so tired he could no longer hold them up. So Aaron and Hur stood on either side of Moses and held his hands steady and they won the battle. (Exodus 17:11)

One of the ways we can strengthen our hands and be made strong in our weakness is by lifting up our hands in prayer and worship. As we lift up our hands it becomes an act of worship and acknowledging of God and our need of Him.  Just as on my run today, if we choose to focus on keeping our arms and hands uplifted like Moses did to heaven, and our heart positioned towards prayer and worship, our weaknesses will soon be replaced by strength and an ability to keep going in what we know to do.

Today if you are feeling weak, uncertain or just plain tired I encourage you to take a look at your hands. Are you sitting on them or are they clenched in a fist of anger or rebellion?  Are they being used for good or evil, for blessing or cursing? What are you doing with your hands and with what God has put in them? Because just as Moses held up the staff in his hand and the battle was turned, as we hold our hands and hearts up to God and determine to draw close and become strong in Him, He will turn things in our favour too.

Plus if you need some help or encouragement, which we all do from time to time, do as Moses wisely did and look toward those people that God has positioned in your life. To those who will stand with you, encourage you to draw closer to Jesus and to trust Him more, and will be there to steady your hands and heart so that you will stay the course and see the victory.

So take a new grip with your tired hands and strengthen your weak knees, mark out a straight path for your feet so that those who are weak and lame will not fall but become strong.”(Hebrews 12:12-13 TPT)

“Let my prayer be counted as incense before you, and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice!”(Psalm 141:2 ESV)

Lift up your hand in the holy place and bless the Lord.” (Psalm 134:2 CSB)

Prayer: Lord thank you that you strengthen and enable me to keep going whenever I grow tired. Please help me to lift up my hands and heart in prayer and worship, and that as I do I will become strong today. In Jesus name Amen.
