There is an interesting account in the bible about frogs! I don’t know how you feel about frogs, but I don’t think anyone would have enjoyed the invasion of frogs, the likes of this. There were frogs everywhere.
“The river shall bring forth frogs abundantly, which shall go up and come into your houses, into your bedroom, on your bed, into the houses of your servants, on your people, into your oven, and into your kneading bowls. And the frogs shall come up on you, on your people, and on all your servants. “(Exodus 8:3-4)
This frog invasion happened in Egypt when Moses was asking Pharaoh to let God’s people go from slavery. Pharaoh declined and so came the frogs. To the Egyptians, the frog was a symbol of life and fertility, since millions of them were born after the annual inundation of the Nile which brought fertility to the otherwise barren lands. Consequently, in Egyptian mythology, there began to be a frog – goddess who represented fertility, referred to by Egyptologists as Heqet.
As God attempted to get the point across to Pharaoh that He was the one true God, (by literally flooding the land with frogs), and to listen to Him, those same previously worshipped frogs became a thing of disgust to the people.
God creates everything for our enjoyment; the sun, the ocean, our surroundings, every beautiful thing; He blesses us with houses, cars, possessions, and our gifts and talents. But how often do we give these, God given gifts and things, pride of place and prominence in our lives, instead of Him?
God created those frogs, and yet the Egyptians decided they would worship, and even depend on green, slimy, slippery, amphibians to bring fertility and blessing to their families, instead of looking to God who is the creator of the heavens and earth.
God wants us to be blessed, and for us to experience life to the full (John 10:10), but He wants us to depend and look to Him for it all. When we pursue, and put possessions, success, and even people before God, we are no better than those “idol worshipping frog lovers” who quickly discovered that, frogs are just frogs!
Ask yourself, “how often is that true in my life?” Are there things that I run after, and think highly of? Perhaps even things that I’ve made idols of because, I’ve put them in place of, or before a relationship with Jesus? Be aware, those same things can turn into objects of disgust and disappointment when we see them for what, and who they really are.
Today, open up your life and let God show you if there are any “frogs” in your life. Then put them in their rightful place, before you are confronted with just how empty, worthless, and smelly they can all turn out to be without God.
“You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God.” (Exodus 20:4)
“As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.” (1 Timothy 6:17)
“He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all–how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? “ (Romans 8:32)
Prayer: Lord please reveal to me any “frogs” in my life, where I have allowed the pursuit of other things or relationships to take your rightful place in my heart. Please forgive me, and lead me in the way I should go. In Jesus Name. Amen.
