We have all been created to have a focus and a main thing – the thing that fuels us, that motivates us, that keeps us engaged and interested in life. But with so many aspects of our lives to keep in balance – our work, relationships, and the pursuit of personal goals and dreams, it’s no surprise that the main thing can often get lost, and as a result we can get lost.
I’ve discovered however that the key to keeping what is truly important central to our lives is to make Jesus the main thing – the main one! To purposely make Him central to everything in our lives; for when we do that He promises He will add all those other desires, needs and pursuits that everyone else chases after to us as well.
Jesus said, “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes. Look at the birds of the air: They do not sow or reap or gather into barns—and yet your Heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his lifespan? And why do you worry about clothes? Consider how the lilies of the field grow: They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his glory was adorned like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? Therefore do not worry, saying, “What shall we eat? or “What shall we drink? or “What shall we wear?” For the pagans pursue all these things, and your Heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto you.” (Matthew 6:25-33)
Essentially Jesus is saying, “keep the main thing the main thing”. Don’t spend your life on what will not satisfy, and your energy on that which at the end of the day will still leave you wondering, “is this all there is to life?”
Even those who profess to know Jesus can get distracted. The religious leaders did, and Jesus rebuked them because they had gotten caught up in secondary matters, whilst missing the main things of justice, mercy and faithfulness. He called them blind guides, who strain at a gnat and swallow a camel. (Matthew 23:23-24) They forgot the main thing is to be walking, talking demonstrations of God’s saving, healing and restoring power to a dying world.
Let’s not make the same mistake as the religious leaders, but instead be people who keep God and the spreading of His kingdom as our main thing in life. We don’t have to wonder what we are called to do or be. Jesus made it clear what we are to focus on, promising that He will take care us. He said, “As you go, preach this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven is near. Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.”(Matthew 10:7-8)
We can spend all our energy toiling to add to our bank accounts, getting caught up in arguments, distracted by news reports, face book and what the rest of the world thinks of us and what we believe….. or we can go into all the world and preach the good news, healing the sick, raising the dead, driving out demons and setting the captives free.
Let’s keep the main thing the main thing, and get to it!
Prayer: Lord I ask that you help me to keep the main thing the main thing and to not get caught up in the pursuits of the world, or what others may think of me. I choose to keep you central to everything in my life and to actively seek to release heaven on earth. In Jesus Name Amen.
