Sometimes we can be afraid of our own thoughts and perhaps even fear that the negative or bad things we think about will come to pass. I think that is a tactic of the devil. He tries to make us afraid of our own thoughts, partly to keep us in bondage to our fears and negative thinking, and partly to make us feel that we must keep these thoughts and consequently our feelings hidden from others.
However that is not how God operates, nor is it the truth we find in His word. We may have negative fearful thoughts, but the best thing we can do is to bring those thoughts out into the light. When we keep things hidden within us in the darkness, we essentially give them room to grow, and the opportunity to exert power over us. Whereas when we bring our thoughts into the light, and examine and process them for what they are, we often find there is no truth or power in them. Often the thoughts that cause us to fear or to become negative are simply lies of the devil that we have allowed to circulate around and around in our heads. When we bring them into the light, and put these fearful negative thoughts alongside what God says in the Bible, they are no match for what He says, and His power over every evil.
“For everything hidden is meant to be revealed, and everything concealed is meant to be brought to light.” (Mark 4:22)
The bible teaches us that it’s what we believe in our hearts, pray, ask and say that comes to pass. Yes our thoughts are important, but we don’t have to be afraid of our thoughts, we just have to regularly do an inventory check regarding what we are allowing to “buzz” around in our minds.
It’s when we don’t keep a check on our thoughts that we begin to speak them, which leads to us believing and acting upon them. If we have a negative fearful thought, we just need to acknowledge it is there, process whether there is any validity to it, and then speak and apply God’s word to it. When we speak the word, we are saying the truth and that in a sense cancels out any power of the negative thought. What we say and believe in our hearts is what we receive.
“So Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in God. For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.” (Mark 11:22-24)
Today if you are struggling with negative or fearful thoughts, take the time to think about what you are thinking about, and then put it through the filter of God’s word. Do your thoughts contradict God; do they disagree with His promises and what He says in His word? If they do, then replace these thoughts by speaking and acting upon what God says about you.
God’s word is powerful and when we speak it out it has the power to cancel out the negative of every evil. God is watching over His word to perform it, as are the angels who carry out His word and plans.
“Praise the Lord, you angels, you might ones who carry out his plans listening for each of his commands” (Psalms 103:20)
“Casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:5)
Prayer: Lord thank you that I don’t have to live in fear or bondage to my thoughts. Help me to take the time to check up on what I am thinking about, and then to apply your word to every thought so that I am thinking, speaking and acting upon the truths of your word. In Jesus name Amen.
