There is a saying, which is actually from the bible that says, “out of the mouth the heart speaks”
Jesus said, “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth that which is good, and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings forth that which is evil; for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.” (Luke 6:45)
Essentially Jesus was saying to His listeners that what comes out of your mouth defines you. What we talk about, where our passions lie, what we think and truly care about will all come out in our words and utterances.
We all know that if we are angry or holding bitterness or disappointment in our hearts these things are eventually going to come out in what we say. When we are under pressure what we really believe, and not just platitudes is what comes bursting forth from our mouths.
An easy way of checking on the condition of our hearts and attitudes is to “listen to our mouths.” God cares about our words because He knows how powerful they are, but He cares more about what is behind our words and the condition of our hearts. He wants us to be able to be the kind of people who can speak freely, who live whole and healed, bringing life forth from our hearts and mouths – essentially that our mouth is a fountain of life.
Sometimes we may in fact need to have a “heart transplant” where God replaces our stony heart where we have hardened our hearts against Him and others, and replaces it with a heart of flesh. Other times we need to undergo God’s “open heart surgery” where we allow Him to place His healing balm on our wounds. When we allow God to touch our hearts like this He is then able to fill them with His love, kindness, and forgiveness so that we become a person whose life and words are like fountains of life for all who hear them.
God says, “He heals the broken-hearted and bandages their wounds.” (Psalm 147:3)
“And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart.” (Ezekiel 36:26)
Today listen to your words and check on the condition of your heart. Do you need God to give you a new heart, or to heal an area of your life? Let’s take our words more seriously and understand that what we say does define us. It‘s pretty simple – if our hearts are filled with good; with love, faith and trust our mouths reflect that. If it’s filled with bad; hurts, bitterness and disappointment, our mouths reflect that.
God says, “The mouth of a good person is a deep, life-giving well, but the mouth of the wicked is a dark cave of abuse.” (Proverbs 10:11) Let’s fill our hearts with God’s words, His thoughts, His love and a trust in His goodness for our future, so that our mouths become fountains of life today.
“May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.” (Psalm 19:14)
“Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:10)
Prayer: Jesus forgive me where my words have not only revealed the mess my heart is in, but also where I have failed to allow your love in. Please create in me a clean heart, so that my mouth will be a fountain of life, and my words will be pleasing in your sight. In Jesus name Amen.
