8 August - How To Add Value

One of the things I'm encouraged by my mentors and in business is to be a person who seeks to add value to the people around me. It’s refreshing when you come across this mindset as in the world and marketplace there is often an attitude of take, take, take.

However, if someone has taken the time to stop and listen, buy from you, or taken the time to seek you out, then adding value and giving to that person is creating a distinction between the mainstream and who you are.

God wants us to be a light and just as we have been blessed by him, He loves for us to seek to be a blessing and add value to those in our world. That when others spend time or talk with us they go away feeling uplifted, encouraged, and better for their time with us.

I had a doctor when our kids were younger that whenever I visited him, I would feel better just for popping in to see him. At one point we lived in the same area as he did and we’d often hear his cheery voice down the aisle of the shopping centre, and on spotting us he’d always stop and take the time in his busy schedule to say Hi. He was, and still is my favourite doctor because of his cheerful demeanor, genuine interest and care for me and my family.

Jesus set an example in his ministry on earth of adding value, blessing and being an encouragement to everyone he was around. Mother Teresa described how we can follow His example by being a contemplative in the heart of the world. When we contemplate every day how we can add value to others and be a part of what Jesus is doing in the lives of those around us.

Winston Churchill said, “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give”.

As we give to others and seek to add value to their lives over just doing a job, making a transaction, or getting what we can out of a relationship we will:

1. Find fulfillment and purpose in helping others.

2. Unlock our full potential when we serve others.

3. Not only find wealth, success, and happiness, but we will thrive in life.

Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” (Luke 6:28)

“The generous soul will be made rich, And he who waters will also be watered himself.” (Proverbs 11:25-26)

Wherever Jesus went people were blessed for just being in His presence and hearing his words. Determine today that you are going to grow to be like him and that everyone will be glad whenever you are in their presence or listen to the words you say.

Prayer: Lord thank you that you love me so much and that I can be your hands and feet wherever I go today. I have an opportunity to add value to another person’s life just by being who you have made me to be, so I ask that you give me wisdom and show me where I can bless someone’s life today. In Jesus name Amen.
