8 Jan – There’s No Comparison To You

Our youngest son was upset today because he couldn’t keep up with everyone else while doing an exercise routine, which caused him to feel small and insecure. Unfortunately, he fell into the trap of comparing himself to others instead of realising that the only person he needed to compete with was the person he was yesterday.

The temptation to compare ourselves to others is a constant battle. It can cause us to lose focus and to let go of our goals. Our comparisons either highlight our dominance, which can quickly lead to us becoming prideful and arrogant, or we start to feel inferior and insecure, believing we are less than others.

When we compare ourselves, we waste precious energy, focusing on other people’s’ lives rather than our own.

Instead of being thankful for all the blessings in our life, the practice of comparing often causes us to think that God’s blessings are in short supply and that we are losing at life while others are winning.

But God says you are His masterpiece created with a particular purpose, and with a unique plan for your life. (Ephesians 2:10).

One of our daughters specialises in exercise and fortunately today her little brother was able to make a quick phone call to her. She encouraged him that he was doing great, and for him to concentrate on his goals and achievements rather than comparing himself to others. His only comparison need be against who he was yesterday. As a result, he went back and finished his workout and finished the day with a win – His win, against himself and no one else.

Today remember that you are unique and that God made you the way you are. Psalm 139:14 tells us that we are “fearfully and wonderfully made.”

When you allow Him to, God will transform you into the best version of yourself and help and encourage you to keep growing.

If tempted to start comparing yourself, thank God for making you the way you are, concentrate on what you want to achieve and focus on your strengths rather than any weaknesses.

Trust God today to finish the work that He’s started, and for him to continue to lead you into the extraordinary life He has planned.

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”. (Jeremiah 29:11)

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them”. (Ephesians 2:10)

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you”. (Matthew 6:33)

Prayer; Lord forgive me where I have fallen into the comparison trap. Help me to count my blessings and be thankful for my life. Help me run my own race and not to miss any of the life you have planned for me. In Jesus Name. Amen.
