24 June - Where Do You Come From

I was visiting a friend's hometown recently and I was listening and watching as they reminisced about their past and where they had come from. One thing however I’ve repeatedly noticed is that it can be difficult to go back to where you have come from, because things change, and people and places don’t stay the same. But we all still want to have a connection to our roots.

Knowing and understanding where you come from helps us to move forward. I think unless we have a grounding in something; either a place, person, or understanding of who we are, we're prone to wander aimlessly or find ourselves being buffeted around by the things that happen around us.

I’ve discovered however that many of the things that people place their security and roots down into aren’t things that will remain. People and circumstances will change but the good news is that there is one who remains constant. When everything else fades, wears out, moves on, or grows old, Jesus does not. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever and He does not change like shifting shadows.

Because Jesus remains the same, He is the best place and one to plant our roots and put our trust in. People may come and go, and the storms of life hit, but the bible says if we plant our roots and listen to what Jesus says, we will be like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Our leaves will never wither, and we’ll prosper in all we do. (Psalm 1:3 NLT)

Today I encourage you to assess who and where you have planted your life. If you realise that what and who you have put your security in isn’t going to stand the test of time or the storms of life, then spend some time reconnecting with the one who loves you more than you will ever know and determine to focus on planting your life in Him. Then regardless of what happens, you will remain steady and stable knowing the way to go and who to depend on.

,

Prayer: Lord thank you that I can put my roots down into you and in doing so I will out more fully who I am and my life and future. In Jesus' name Amen.
