28 March - Made To See The Light

I've been studying the eye this week in Neuroscience, and I've been amazed at our complex visual system that enables us at a glance to describe the location, colour and texture of objects and if they are moving and their direction and speed.

Our ability to see revolves around light energy being refined from electrical signals to synaptic interactions within the circuitry of the retina. If that sounds complex, it's because it is...

However, the one thing our eyes are not made to do well is to see clearly in the dark, which makes me think that we generally aren't' made to focus on or be around darkness much at all.

It's probably why Jesus talks about being the light and for us to focus on those things that are pure, lovely and good and to have no part of darkness or evil. (Philippians 4:8-10)

Instead, Jesus wants us to come up and away from darkness and focus our attention on His goodness, love and light so that we start to reflect and radiate Him and the things of heaven. The darkness cannot extinguish His light, but we need to be mindful of what we are looking at and thinking about so we don't get caught up in the things of darkness.

To help us, Jesus has given us His Word as a great source of light that illuminates our path and helps us to know what to look at and think upon. "Your word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path" (Psalm 119;105)

The Bible encourages us to think about those things that are pure, good, lovely and worth shouting about. (Philippians 4:8)

We are lifted above the darkness when we live in that realm of looking upon His light like we are created to do. We can hear from heaven, receive all the revelation and insights we need, and pray powerful and effective prayers rather than struggle under worry and fear.

Today look to Jesus, who is the Word who "became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory. (John 1:14)

No darkness can dispel His light, and as we look at Him, we reflect His love and goodness and will become lights to the world just as Jesus said we were.

"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they set it on a lamp stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." (John 5:14-16)

Prayer: Lord, help me not to get distracted or dragged down by any of the darkness of the world, but to look to you and the light, which enables me to see clearly so that I reflect your goodness and hope to all those around me. In Jesus' Name Amen
