There is an account about a guy named Joshua in the bible. (Joshua 5:13-15) Moses had died and Joshua was now leading the Israelites into the land that God had promised them. However the Israelites faced some rather large obstacles that they needed to get past. Firstly was the city of Jericho, whose gates were tightly shut against them.
Joshua as leader needed to find a solution quickly, and that’s where God came in.
“When Joshua was near the town of Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with sword in hand. Joshua went up to him and demanded, “Are you friend or foe?” “Neither one”, he replied. “I am the commander of the Lord’s army.”
At that moment Joshua had to acknowledge something. It wasn’t whether they angel was friend or foe; or whether God was for Joshua or against Him. The angel made it quite clear to Joshua, “I’m not getting into that, because it’s not about me, it’s about you.” He essentially was asking Joshua where he stood with God. Was he for God or not?
Joshua’s response was to “fall with his face to the ground in reverence, I am at your command,” Joshua said. “What do you want your servant to do?” The commander of the Lord’s army replied, “Take off your sandals for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did as he was told.” (Joshua 5:13-15)
Often we ask ourselves, and God the question, “Is God for me or against me?” When in fact that is not really the point. Perhaps instead we need to be asking, “Am I for God?” Am I for Him 100%?” “Am I for God whole heartedly with everything I have, in every decision, or am I not?” Because God is very clear in His Word about where He stands. He’s for us and not against us and therefore “If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up for us all, how will He not also, along with Him, freely give us all things?”(Romans 8:31-32)
Today instead of worrying and wondering if God is for you, ask yourself instead where you stand. Are you for God? And if you are, will you do as He says just as Joshua did when the angel of the Lord’s army told Him to act and, “Joshua did as He was told.” (Joshua 5:15)
Prayer: Lord please help me to realise just how much you love me, and that you want the very best for my life. The question is never “are you for me, but rather am I for you?” Help me to choose you and what you say everyday as Joshua did when He declared, “But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve…But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD.” (Joshua 24:15)
