Fixed points are something dancers use to maintain a pathway, and direction and to combat dizziness. They call it spotting; where they learn to spot or focus on an object while turning. You learn spotting by looking at a fixed point and using that as a reference point to focus on for as long as possible during a turn, before whipping your head around to look at it again.
I think dancers have discovered something that all of us could learn from to help us remain stable and steady in a somewhat dizzying world. Especially whenever we, or others in our life, feel disorientated and unsure of where, what, and who to look at and listen to next.
When you don’t know what to do or don’t have the answers to life’s pressing questions you can easily become overwhelmed, and even more so when you remember that the literal ground you are standing on, is spinning once every twenty-four hours around the sun. Therefore, finding a fixed point on which to anchor your life seems to me, to be a very good idea.
I’ve found the best point for me is Jesus and what He says. He is steadfast, unwavering, and faithful and there is no darkness in Him, nor does He lie. Need a fixed point of focus, Jesus is it - the ultimate unshakable reference point to keep your life on track. (Matthew 24:35)
SPOTTING JESUS
Spotting Jesus is relatively easy and isn't all about understanding complex principles and formulas for life. It's about inviting Jesus into your world; your everyday life, and then reading and taking hold of His words (found in the Bible) and aligning your life, your comings and goings, thoughts, words, and actions with what He says and the example He sets.
Jesus said, “Simply join your life with mine. Learn my ways and you’ll discover that I’m gentle, humble, easy to please, you will find refreshment and rest in me.” (Matthew 11:29 TPT)
“So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it.” (Romans 12;1-2 The Message)
Once you start to look for Jesus you will see Him everywhere. In creation, in His word, in others who know Him, in the miracles that happen every day around you. No matter how busy, chaotic or "spinnie" life gets, once you spot Jesus, and determine that no matter what direction you are facing you will keep turning to look at Him and His word, you will be able to maintain your pathway and direction and combat even the most dizzying circumstances with grace and poise.
I encourage you to keep spotting Jesus today. (Jeremiah 29:13 NIV)
“You will keep the mind that is dependent on You in perfect peace, for it is trusting in You.” (Isaiah 26:3)
GOING DEEPER - NEW EPISODE
You can also listen to my podcast Going Deeper. Check out this week's episode "Don't Just Know About Jesus, Get To Know Him!"
This episode of Going Deeper dives into the topic of how Jesus wants us to know Him rather than simply knowing about Him. A relationship with Him is not merely obedience to a set of rules, but rather a way of seeing creation and all that is within it, and God’s heart towards what he has made. The practical session at the end of this episode will open up a whole new way of relating to Jesus as Dayle teaches how to “come up”.(Live now)
Prayer: Jesus, please help me to "spot" and fix my focus on you today and that as I do I will be better able to set my heart and mind on what you say so that everything else in my life falls into place. In Jesus' name Amen.
