15 March - How To Overcome Procrastination

How often do you say or think I’ll get to that later, and you keep putting it off?

This tendency is called procrastination and is a common problem. Even though it brings a short-term gain of not having to do or be somewhere, it does have negative side effects. Procrastination can cause us to miss opportunities, perform badly, have bad grades, and creates distractions in our relationships and productivity.

People often say they really want to do something or know they would benefit from dealing with a particular issue. But before they know it, five, ten or fifty years have gone by. It’s all too easy to sit back and look at others and say, “I could have done that, or been that, or gone there.” But when we procrastinate, we inevitably miss opportunities.

Although there are several potential solutions for procrastination, one of the best ways to overcome it is if you find yourself putting off things, is to think of behaviours or tasks you’d rather perform if given the chance—perhaps spending time with friends, watching a favourite TV program, or treating yourself in some way. Then, do those things only after you’ve completed the task you've been putting off.

Research suggests this approach may help people to stop avoiding things like going to the dentist, studying, dealing with an issue, and tackling household tasks they don't typically enjoy doing.

Today, make a decision to stop putting things off in your life and get to them instead, so you can fully embrace and enjoy your day and future.

“To everything, there is a season and a time to every purpose under the heaven”. (Ecclesiastes 3:1)

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye.” (Psalm 32:8)

Prayer: Lord, please help me to quiet my heart and mind so that I can hear the dreams you have placed in my heart. I don’t want to live a life of procrastinating and postponing, so that I never actually live the life you have for me. Help me to seize the day today! In Jesus Name. Amen.
