19 July – What goes in must come out.

There is a funny little children’s book called “everybody poops” which clearly illustrates that “what goes in, must come out!”

Essentially the “what goes in must come out” truth is a helpful life principal to remember, for whether we like it or not we are the sum total of what we have consumed and allowed into our lives. Which means that if we don’t like what our life looks like perhaps we should consider what we are consuming.

This relates to more than just the food we eat, but also what we look at, read, listen to and spend time with. Because whatever we “consume” in life will eventually come out, and if our choices aren’t healthy, edifying and beneficial physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually we, and all those around us will reap the consequences.

Jesus said, “A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” (Luke 6:45)

So, “Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life.” (Proverbs 4:23)

Perhaps we would all be wise to regularly examine what we are consuming in every area of our lives, and to think and pray about what is going in, because everything will eventually come out, and if we aren’t careful it may not be pretty when it does.

Today, instead of just soaking up and putting in “whatever,” regardless of whether it is beneficial or not, let’s listen and act upon what God’s word says, and focus on those things that are pure, noble and worth giving a shout about. That everyday we would be wise about what goes in and comes out of our lives, so that it will not be toxic to ourselves and others, but instead will help us to grow into all that we were created to be.

Jesus said, “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.” (Matthew 7:24)

Whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy think on these thing.” (Philippians 4:8)

Prayer: Lord help me to have wisdom and discernment so that I will make wise choices about what I allow in, and consequently what comes out of my life. Help me to be honest, and that if I don’t like what I see in my life perhaps I need to make some changes about what I am consuming. In Jesus name Amen.
