2 December - How To Overcome Boredom

Today I was having a conversation with someone, and they were struggling with feeling bored and, as a result, were voicing their frustration. Perhaps we can feel that way because we start looking at the world around us and surmise there are so many things we can't do healthily or without negative consequences that we fail to see all the things that Jesus has for us that we can do.

Being like a little child is one key to keeping wonder in our lives and being excited about every new day. (Matt 18:4-5; Mark 10:14)

It's like my little grandson Ezekiel who is inquisitive, laughs, explores, loves cuddles and wants to know about everything he can touch and see.

He is made in God's image, and if he is a reflection of His creator's heart, then it's easy to surmise that God is very good. He's someone you would want to know and experience up close and personal, He's not boring, and there is joy to be found in Him and all He has made for us.

Unfortunately, religion and incorrect thinking about who God is can hinder us from knowing Him. Instead, we can limit ourselves to only seeing Jesus through the lens of our tradition, systems and the institutions we have built. When perhaps sitting in the sunshine watching a little child toddle from one new exciting find to the next or marvelling at any of the other amazing things God has created reveals and helps us experience Him far more realistically and deeply than anything else.

I encourage you to take the time to ask to get to know the real Jesus and to seek to experience Him in a deeper way for yourself.

He is the one who reveals His heart in all that is good around us. In the kaleidoscope of stars in the night sky, the splash of the waves as you swim in the ocean, the beauty of a sunset, the smile and touch of someone you love, or the squishy cuddles of a little person in your life.

These things all point to Jesus and who He is, and as you seek Him, get out and experience life and choose to be thankful for the wonder and beauty in all He has made, you'll realise you actually aren't bored anymore.

"The more you thank life, the more life gives you to be thankful for."

"Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!"

(Psalm 118:1)

"And I continually long to know the wonders of Jesus more fully (understanding the remarkable wonders of His Person more completely) and to experience the overflowing power of his resurrection working in me." (Philippians 3:10 Amp/TPT)

"The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day, they pour forth speech; night after night, they reveal knowledge. They have no speech; they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world." (Psalm 19:1-4 NIV)

Prayer: Lord, thank you for revealing yourself in all good around me. Please help me to know and experience you more deeply and to see and realise that there is so much to be thankful for and wonder at that I never need to be bored again. In Jesus name Amen.
