24 Feb – Switch the light on!

light over darkness

One of the things we must come to grips with is that there is darkness, and I don’t mean the night time. It’s the darkness that attempts to snuff out anything good, loving, pure or holy in and around us. Darkness represents the evil that has crept into the world attempting to pollute anything that is good, leaving only doubt, struggle and fear in its wake. It wants to destroy and hinder those things that represent light and Jesus who is the giver of that light.

To be honest we need to wake up to the subtlety and seduction of the darkness because the devil who is the cause of this darkness is very clever at disguising and deceiving people as to the dangers of walking in or playing in the dark. He tries to make the dark look like fun by tempting our appetites and flesh with a quick fix, feel good, you’re in charge of your destiny, worry about the consequences later type mentality and lifestyle. Unfortunately none of that is true because even moments spent in the dark are designed to rob, kill and destroy from us. They rob us of our self respect, self worth, purity, healthy loving relationships and our hope, visions and dreams.

Thankfully to combat this darkness is Jesus who is described as the one whom, when people are walking in darkness they will see. “That they will see a great light, for the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness doesn’t extinguish the light” (John 1:5)

When we ask Jesus to be part of our lives something amazing happens. Where there was darkness inside of us; darkness that cultivated fear, doubts, deceitfulness, impurity, selfishness, lust and sin to govern our lives there is suddenly a light that gets switched on on the inside of us.

That light starts to shine in the dark and the darkness can’t overcome it, because the light is Jesus’ presence in our lives. He is the light of the world and where He is; where He is welcomed, where we make room for Him, where we listen and allow him to light the way and direct us on a new path, then the darkness cannot extinguish that light or the abundant overflowing life He brings.

The light of Jesus in our hearts wipes our slates clean and we are given a new life; a new beginning. Essentially we are a new creation, old things have past away, and everything has been made new. (2 Corinthians 5 :17)

Today I encourage you to choose and welcome Jesus’ light into your life. Whenever you are unsure of what to do, where to go, and what choices to make just choose what represents and is of the light. The light will shine a way and direct your thoughts, actions and behaviour, so that all you have to do is feed or think upon the light of Jesus, upon His words found in the bible, and His light within and all around you, instead of looking at or following the darkness. Choose light over darkness everyday and you will  know the way to go in life and be kept safe and secure.

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

Prayer: Lord please give me wisdom to know the difference between the light and the darkness, and to be aware of any of the devil’s traps to try and get me walking out of the light and in the darkness which only leads to loss and pain. I want to walk in your light today. In Jesus name Amen
