What happens to a cistern when it gets a blockage? Well if you have ever had the misfortune of having a blocked toilet or drain, or smelling a pool of water when it hasn’t been flowing you will know it is not “pretty”. A lake or pond with no water flowing in or out of it turns putrid. Nasty things breed, slimy stuff grows, and diseases flourish. Plants and fish start to die.
We’re like a cistern, and we are meant to be reservoirs of life.
John 14:14 says that Jesus is the living water. His living water of life, of love, of peace, of power, and joy flows like rivers within us. We are to keep our reservoir supplied with clean water that washes away any junk. Life is meant to flow in, and flow out of us.
But what can cause our reservoirs or cisterns to bet blocked up?
Hurts unforgiveness, cares of the world, toil, weights, and hard times, can crowd and obstruct that life and “dam” it up. Our source of life can be blocked off, as things come into our reservoirs to rob us of our freedom. The result is unfulfilled broken dreams and vision, talents and gifts not used, words not said, songs not sung, paintings not painting, holidays not taken, adventures not explored, sins not forgiven, and risks not taken.
All these things block our river of life and the Holy spirit from working in our life. Instead “lurgies” start to grow and fester in our reservoirs. Once beautiful things grew in our lives, but now blockages have caused those things to wither, die and decay.
The answer to this dilemma is to clean out the reservoir, to flush out the cistern, to let the Holy spirit flow rivers of life through every part of our being. That is what Jesus wants for each one of us. That we would have no blockages, no oppression, only freedom.
“Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water. By this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; “(John 7:38)
Jesus came to set us free, He said, “I have come that they may have life and have it to the full“. (John 10:10)
“and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” ” So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:32,36)
“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength, they will soar on wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” ( Isaiah 40:31)
God gives life, and it’s a life that is meant to be lived, enjoyed and embraced with everything we have within us. Not just a mere existence. We are not designed or created to back away from Life! Rivers of life flow from heaven to us, from Jesus to us. But things can obstruct and crowd out that river of life.
Today let Him wash you with His rivers of living water, washing away obstructions of hurt, unforgiveness, tiredness and toil, so that His life and love can flow through every part of your being.
Prayer: Lord Jesus let your healing restoring life flow bringing life in every part of my spirit and soul. I want to live free of the weights and toil that so easily entangle me and to really live. In Jesus Name Amen.
