7 Oct -“Lost in translation”

lost-in-translation

Communication -“the imparting or exchanging of information by speaking, writing, or using some other medium. It includes the conveying, presenting or passing on of information, expressions, thoughts, and feelings“.

We have the ability to communicate like never before thanks to ever advancing technology and mobile devices. We can all spend hours going through our in-boxes and face book. We talk, we text, we tweet, we watch instagram and snap chat. But for all our technology and abilities we are still often unable to reach and connect with one another; many or most of our important communications get “lost in translation”

Perhaps we have forgotten or are no longer taught the basic skills to ensure that we are communicating effectively. This limits our potential to share our thoughts, and express ourselves enough to be heard and understood.

Even with the incredible speed of message technology we have not remedied human flaws and the lack of communication skills from one-on-one to international relations. These miscommunications still cause broken hearts, relationship breakdowns, conflicts, and even wars.

Communication skills are some of the most important skills we can possess. Having knowledge of how best to explain our needs and thoughts while understanding others can make a huge difference in relationships, our career, parenting, and most other areas of our life.

Communication is a mix of listening and transmitting information. How well we perform these two tasks will have a huge effect our lives. Healthy relationships hinge on being able to tell another person your needs and then being understood.

We tend to think of communication as talking and listening but it can be written, as in texts, emails, and books. It can be oral – speaking and listening, or visual – charts and pictures. It can even be nonverbal, as in body language, facial expression, tone of voice, eye contact, gesturing, and even spirit-to-spirit.

The hearing ear and the seeing eye, the Lord has made them both.” (Proverbs 20:12)

Today while communicating with others, rather than responding immediately, take a moment to think, and to even try to connect heart to heart, and spirit to spirit. Assess the words and nonverbal communication of the other people involved. Consider what you want to communicate and how to do this effectively, and then pay attention to your body language, facial expression, eye contact and tone of voice.

Good communication works when everyone is focused on listening to each other’s point of view, and looking for ways to understand, and if necessary to resolve situations. It takes practice; but it’s worth the time and effort, and it’s something God consistently encourages in His word.

A fool takes no pleasure in understanding, but only in expressing his opinion”. (Proverbs 18:2)

My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry.” (James 1:19)

“The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.” (Proverbs 12:15)

If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame.” (Proverbs 18:13)

Whoever keeps his mouth and his tongue keeps himself out of trouble.” (Proverbs 21:23)
