Today I was traveling to watch our daughter, Shara Rose performing, and my hubby Philip was driving, It was late afternoon and I was getting sleepy and kept nodding off, which wasn't conducive to conversation or taking in my surroundings.
My sleepiness got me thinking of how Jesus warned us about falling asleep and getting complacent in our relationship with him and therefore our capacity to grow in our faith.
He reminded us to therefore, not sleep as others do but let us be alert and sober.” (1 Thessalonians 5:6)
God isn't talking about us not sleeping physically, but rather for us to remain alert and make the most of every opportunity that He brings so that we don't miss a thing. God has a plan and specific design for our life and too often we can become unaware, and "sleepy" when it comes to walking in His best for our life. However, much like how there are things we can do to avert falling asleep physically, there are also some keys to help us stay alert in our faith and to make the most of all the possibilities God has for our lives. 1. Fix your focus - focus on where you are going.
"Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us." (Philippians 3:13-14 NLT) Be aware of what opportunities and new things God brings along your path and let them inspire and encourage you to think, bigger, outside the box, and more creatively. We live in an amazing world and when we are focusing on God’s design for our life, he will do exceedingly more than we can imagine. 2. Share with others - We are better together and when we do life with others we achieve and enjoy life more. The key is to find those people who compliment and spur you on. The Bible says, "Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labour; If either of them falls down, one can help the other up". (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10) 3. Avoid distractions and dramas - a common problem when there is a disturbance or incident on the road, is that one crash can cause another accident or incident to happen.
People passing by get distracted when looking at a crash or mishap and end up being involved in one themselves or slowing down to the point where they cause congestion on the road. Interestingly problems arise, not because people stop to help, but simply because they get caught looking where they shouldn’t, rather than being focused and proactive. Today I encourage you not to get sleepy and distracted in your journey. You have a lot of life still to live and good things that God has prepared ahead of time for you to walk in. So determine to fix your eyes on the one who promises to lead and guide you and stay awake and aware, because there are great things right in front of you and up ahead. (Ephesians 2:10)
Prayer: Lord thank you that you help me to stay focused and aware of everything that is going on so that I don’t miss a thing. I trust you to lead and guide me today. In Jesus name Amen
