9 March - How To Not Let Your Heart Drift Away

I was reading this week some words about “listening very carefully to the truth we have heard because otherwise we may drift away" (Hebrews 2:1)

I don't particularly want to drift away from the truth of what God has for me, so it got me thinking about all the opinions and different environments we can often be surrounded by and how these things can be strikingly different to what Jesus says and how He asks us to live.

The truth is whatever we predominantly surround ourselves with is what we are going to follow and what will emerge most in our life.

Jesus repeatedly encourages us to listen and pay attention to what is going in our "ear and eye gates’ because that’s what will take root in our hearts and dictate how we behave, believe and think.

He said” therefore everyone who hears these words of mind and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” (Matthew 7:24)

Following Jesus isn’t complicated and when we listen and tune our ears to His voice and words it will build our trust in Him and our faith, because “faith comes from hearing the message and the message is the word of God”. (Romans 10:17)

However, if we allow that tuning into the sound of his voice and Word to slip or we start listening to others rather than Him, we will undoubtedly drift away. Our hearts follow what we treasure most, and they can get cluttered with the cares of the world, our undealt with issues, and the desire for other things. (Matthew 13 NIV)

Today I encourage you to keep listening and tune your ears and heart to Jesus. Determine to choose His way over your own and focus straight ahead on the purpose and plans God has for your life. Then you will never drift away, and He will keep you in perfect peace, bless what you seek to do and become and direct your steps every day of your life. (Ephesians 3:20; Jeremiah 29:11-12; Isaiah 26:3)

“Pay attention to what I say, turn your ear to my words, do not let them out of our sight, keep them in the midst of your heart.” (Proverbs 4:20-21)

“Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers, and blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord.” (Proverbs 16:20)

Prayer: Lord, thank you for your plan and purpose for my life. Please help me to keep it simple and to seek after and follow you and what you say so that I never drift away from the truth. In Jesus name Amen.
