What sort of heart do you have?
It's an important question because your heart is a receptor, and you receive and give out of it according to its condition.
If you want to do a quick check-up on its condition, listen to what you are saying because out of our mouths, the heart speaks. (Matthew 12:24)
The Bible says, "Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life." (Proverbs 4:23)
We can choose every day to supercharge our lives with positivity, being around those who inspire and encourage us and focusing upon what Jesus' says, or we can choose the opposite.
The good news, however, is that when we choose Jesus' way consistently and keep a watch on our hearts and what they are soaking up, something starts to change inside us.
At first, it may be only a subtle shift towards positivity and thinking better thoughts, but it doesn't take long before you start to notice that you feel more peaceful, closer to, and more aware of Jesus and are healthier, disciplined, wiser, more loving, and generally happier.
Here are some things to keep in mind in guarding your heart and choosing the higher life:
1. Look at your input - who or what we are listening to and spending time with, as what we surround ourselves with is who and what we will become.
"He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm." (Proverbs 13:20)
Our hearts are like sponges and will soak up whatever we are around the most.
The Bible gives us a simple and easy guidelines to follow. It's found in Philippians 4:8, which says,
"Finally, whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable — if anything is excellent or praiseworthy — think on these things." (Philippians 4:8)
2. Ask God to put a guard across your mouth so that you don't keep saying the things you later regret, and be diligent with what you allow into your thought, life and heart.
"Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips." Don't let me drift toward evil or take part in acts of wickedness. Don't let me share in the delicacies of those who do no wrong." (Psalm 141:3-4)
Everything springs and overflows from the condition of our hearts. If we store good things in our hearts, our words and actions will reflect that and vice versa.
It's your choice, but if you choose the higher life and God's way of living, He promises He will strengthen you daily and help you be the person you were always created to be.
"I call heaven and earth to speak against you today. I have put in front of you life and death, the good and the curse. So choose life." (Deuteronomy 30:19)
"Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; And see if there be any hurtful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way." (Psalm 139:23)
Prayer: Lord, please help me to choose wisely the things I "soak up" into my life and to take care of my heart's condition so that out it flows good things. In Jesus' Name Amen.
