When our kids were younger, we would all put our names down on a piece of paper and put them into a jar, and then each week, we would all draw out a name.
For the rest of the week, we would do something thoughtful and nice for the person whose name he had drawn out – we called this our special person for the week, and the whole point was to seek to connect and be interested in doing something special for someone out in the family.
Having a special person helped us all look outside ourselves and seek to do and be kinder and more thoughtful with those in our world.
Kindness has the power to improve people’s days, remind them that they are seen and help those who are struggling or feeling grumpy. And practising little acts of kindness and treating people like your special person can soften a hardened heart and heal a broken one.
Plus, medical studies have found that there are huge benefits to being kind. Not only does kindness make us and others feel good, but studies have demonstrated that the psychological benefits of kindness are reflected in the brain’s circuitry. Being kind increases happiness, life satisfaction, and self-esteem. It works for young and old, race, religion or social status.
The Bible says, “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another as God in Christ forgave you.” (Ephesians 4:32)
But sometimes we need a little help to be kind and to treat people like they are our special person. That’s where we can ask for Jesus’ help on what to do and ask him to fill our hearts with his love and kindness. Where we run out, he comes in and when we may not know how to treat someone He will encourage us to take the route of love and peace. He knows His love working through us will never fail. (1 Corinthians 13; Romans 5:5)
Jesus says you are fantastic, kind, patient and one of the nicest people around. The more you receive his love and acceptance and understand that you are a new person in Him, the easier it is to be nice and to treat people like they are your special person every day.
“Therefore if anyone is in Christ, He is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold the new has come!” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
Today why not make the time to show kindness to those around you. It’s good for your health, brain, and mood; you may make someone’s day and even meet your soul mate.
Prayer: Lord, thank you that you are so kind and that when I connect with you your kindness will fill my life. Please help me share kindness with others today and look for opportunities to make someone’s day. In Jesus name Amen.
