Being successful in anything in life takes courage and commitment and undoubtedly we will find ourselves needing some wisdom on how to navigate some situations to enable us to succeed.
Nehemiah in the Bible is a great example of performing well even under extreme pressure and we can learn a lot from him. His choices positioned him to succeed where others had failed, and his leadership highlights the importance of:
1. Purpose and vision – Nehemiah refused to be distracted or discouraged by those around him. Instead, purpose and vision helped him focus regardless of what his enemies or even his countryman said. He knew his purpose and kept the vision to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem before him. When his enemies tried to intimidate him, he responded by remaining up on the wall he was building rather than coming down to his enemy’s level. His purpose and vision literally kept him above distractions and discouragement.
Nehemiah said, “I am doing a great work, and I cannot come down. Why should the work stop while I leave it and come down to you?” (Nehemiah 6:3)
2. Commitment – Nehemiah was committed to the assignment and task he believed God had given him. This enabled Nehemiah to draw the best out of others and to complete the wall in 52 days. Commitment will always create focus and energy for the task at hand!
3. Courage– There is no doubt Nehemiah and anyone else who has succeeded in their purpose has chosen the path of courage. God’s Word refers to courage as good cheer, boldness and confidence. God repeatedly says to fear not and have courage in life.
When we feel weak, He promises that we can lean on Him and be strengthened with power and ability. “But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” (Isaiah 40:31)
“Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” (Nehemiah 8:10)
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9-11)
“Finally be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.” (Ephesians 6:10)
Today take the time to clarify your purpose and assignment in life. Then commit to what you have chosen to be and do so that you will have great success.
“Write the vision, and make it plain: that he that reads it may run with it.” (Habakkuk 2:2)
“Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” (Proverbs 16:3)
Prayer: Lord, thank you that I have a purpose and reason for being here. I choose to not listen to fear, distractions or those that would cause me to lose heart. Instead, I commit to keeping my eyes on you, your Word and who you say I am today. In Jesus name Amen.
