Five loaves. Two fish. Thousands of hungry people. And somehow—everyone’s fed. Not just a littel bit but a feast for everyone.
And then, just to really make the point of how he provides Jesus asks his disciples to collect the leftiovers - amounting to twelve basketfuls.
I was thinking about that story this week when faced with a provision and what is God doing moment. I wonder what that moment felt like—holding bread in your hands that didn’t even exist an hour earlier. Watching Jesus take something so small and turn it into more than enough. That kind of miracle stays with you… or at least, you’d think it would.
That same day, the disciples got into their boat, and you would think they weren't empty-handed.
There was bread in the boat. Actual leftovers from the miracle. A physical reminder that Jesus had just provided—and would provide again. But when the storm rolled in, they forgot.
But when the storm came, they forgot. They were fighting the waves, struggling against the wind, and their minds went straight to fear. And isn’t that too often just like us?
We can go from breakthrough to breakdown in a heartbeat .From mountaintop faith to that midnight panic. Even with "bread in our boat."
The bread the disciples had in their boat wasn’t just food. It was a reminder. It was proof:
Jesus had already provided.
They had what they needed to get through the storm.
They’d seen Him heal, restore, multiply and He would look after them.
And that same Jesus was the one who came walking toward them in the storm saying: “Don’t be afraid. I am here.” (Matthew 14:27 NLT)
And still, the disciples seemed to miss it. Why? Because they were so focused on what might go wrong, they didn’t realise how Jesus had already provided and what was right there in front of them.
And then later, they do it again. Worried they had forgotten thier lunch and wondering how one loaf was going to be enough. So Jesus calls it out:
“Why are you talking about having no bread? Don’t you remember?”—Mark 8:17–19 (NIV)
He’s saying: You know Me. You’ve seen Me come through for you. Do you really think I’d leave you now?"
There's the message: There’s bread in your boat. Jesus sees you and encourages you to remember how he's moved before. And if He provided back then, He’s not about to stop now. Plus, He is no respector of persons, so what he has done for others, He can do for you.
🌟 Action Steps
Look at what’s already in your hands. Maybe it's a testimony. A word Jesus has spoken to your heat. . A door He opened. Don’t forget the leftovers from the last miracle. They're your bread!
Call it what it is: Bread in the boat. A sign. A reminder. That Jesus has spoken and provided before. He wants to encourage us to look at what we have in our hands already.
Speak it out loud.“Jesus, You’re with me. I have what I need because I have You.” "Thank you there's bread in my boat!"
📖 Bible Verses
“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.”—1 Peter 5:7 (NIV)
“I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry.”—John 6:35 (NIV)
“So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority." Colossians 2:10 (NLT)
🙏 Prayer
Lord, when the storm hits and I might be tempted to panic, please help me remember what’s already in my "boat". You've always been faithful and you promise to provide and lead the way. Please help me to trust You today—knowing You’re not just with me, You’ve already made a way. Thank you that there's bread in my boat. In Jesus name' Amen.
✨ The bread in your boat is more than a memory—it’s a promise. You’re not alone, and you’re not without. You already have what you need.
