Over the past few months God and I have been having a conversation about how and why we are all here. As a result I’m realising as we talk that none of us really come from here at all or even in a wider sense from our mother or father. Even as parents the children I’ve given birth to aren’t primarily from me or my husband at all. That’s because everyone comes firstly from heaven and the heart of God the Father.
Essentially we don’t come from our parents at all, we come through them. We are from heaven, thought up, planned and lovingly created by God. Which means that regardless of how or through whom we arrived, we are all meant to be here, but it’s up to each one of us what we do with our life now that we are. God says, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you and and before you were born I consecrated you.” (Jeremiah 1:5)
“Just as (in His love) He chose us in Christ (actually selected us for Himself as His own) before the foundation of the world.” (Ephesians 1:4 AMP)
Jesus himself was from heaven and came to earth through a woman named Mary so he could be born here on earth.
Sometimes I think we can get far too caught up on the, “where and to whom do I belong,” and also perhaps as parents why we can also end up holding our children too tightly, when really they and we all firstly belong to and come from God. It’s one of the things I think Jesus was trying to explain when he told the story of the prodigal son whose father looked out for him everyday in the hope his son would come back home. When his son finally returned He is heard to say, “Quick! Bring the finest robe in the house and put it on him. Get a ring for his finger and sandals for his feet. And kill the calf we have been fattening. We must celebrate with a feast , for this son of mine was dead and has now returned to life. He was lost, but now he is found.” (Luke 15:22-24)
The Dad in the story is God the Father and He stills waits for his sons and daughters who haven’t remembered where they are really from or as yet acknowledged their loving heavenly Father and come running home. If we don’t know to whom we belong we can also continue to live far below our status as a child of God.
If you are wondering where or whom you come from or your’re struggling with family, your past and where you fit, remember the place where you actually come from and to whom you have always belonged. And if you have children of your own or are planning to someday, know that they come through you, but they don’t ever belong primarily to you; as parents we’ve simply been entrusted with their care.
“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” (Psalm 139:13-15)
Prayer: Lord thank you that I have always belonged to you and that you planned and thought of me before the foundation of the world. Even before I was born you knew me and deemed that I would come into the world at the appointed time I did. Please help me to think of my life with a heavenly perspective, because that’s where I’m really from and to where you desire I return when my life here has been fully lived. In Jesus name Amen.
