20 May – How to Define You

I was doing a mundane task today when I started to think, “This is it, I am just going to be doing this now.” It was not a God thought or even one of my better ones, but I had to wrestle with the difference between what I may be doing at that moment (as we transition into a new city), and my true identity for a few minutes.

I was reminded at that moment that what you are doing does not define who you are. God determines that, and He is the one who says who and what you are, not some task, role or even calling.

When we build our lives on what we do and can produce at any particular time in our lives, we risk basing our self-esteem and worth on the tangible rather than the lasting and often intangible qualities of character, what we believe and our values.

When we choose to invite Jesus into our life, there is one thing that is paramount to our relationship and identity. It is that we find our self and who we are in what Jesus says about us above anything else. His words and truth are to be what sets the scene for our life.

Today who do you say you are and whose voice are you allowing to define you? Because God, the one who created you, wants to be the loudest voice and the one who describes you the most. Determine to focus on who He says you are rather than allowing your identity to be shaped by any given task, title or role.

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” (Ephesians 2:10)

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)

You may be required to do many tasks and take on many roles in life, but these don’t resemble even half of who you truly are in Him or what you are capable of.

Today spend some time with Jesus, look into His word, remind yourself of who you are in Him and know He promises He will do exceedingly more in your life as you trust in Him. Then go out and enjoy your day.

“What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard and what no human mind has conceived the things God has prepared for those who love him.” (2 Corinthians 2:9)

Prayer: Lord, I give you my life today. Thank you that you have a plan and purpose for my life. Please help me be defined only by what you say about me and that I’d see myself as you do; a forgiven, amazing, unique and loved person who has a fantastic future and purpose. In Jesus name Amen.
