21 April – Two Pictures

download (11)

I woke up in the middle of the night and kept on seeing a vision that I’d seen before regarding what it would take to let go of the past and go forward, leaving the old behind. Almost like two sides of a picture – the left side being the past and the right being the future with a cord holding the two sides together. What would it take to cut the cord and those attachments from the past so you could step freely into the other side of the picture and your future?

This vision had me go into prayer specifically for a friend of mine and caused me to reflect on how we can all have attachments to our past which need to be cut off and left behind. Even if we no longer go to those places, have any connection in the physical or even think of particular people and places anymore there still can be unseen, unconscious attachments that to some degree still have a hold on us.

I felt the Lord say, “I can have memorials in your life, but the devil can too.”

We can in fact make memorials of all the relationships and experiences, both good and bad that tie us to the past for a very long time. When we finally let them loose either by dismantling, deleting, selling or whatever it takes to get rid of that thing in our life, we start to feel different and more able to run into our future. Perhaps the reason so many people don’t in fact live out their destiny is because they are dragging around all these attachments that are like memorials to their past that they no longer need or benefit from looking at anymore.

So I took the opportunity this morning to delete some “stuff” from my phone in my old contacts. There’s freedom to be found in pressing delete, because some people and places are just for a season, or are definitely only a memorial to hold us to our past.  In fact as I pressed delete I realised that I had been doing this for several weeks as I’ve been throwing out and selling items that I no longer need or are reminders of things I don’t  want to hold onto to. Some stuff simply slows us down.

The bible says, “Don’t you realise that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win!” (1 Corinthians 9:24)

Paul, who said those word was known as a leader and influential  in his community, yet on knowing Jesus and reflecting on his life he said, “I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done.Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ.” (Philippians 3:7)

Take a look within and around you. Are there memorials to what the devil has worked in your life that you’re better deleting? Where can you sell off or throw away memorials of a time you don’t need to carry forward because it’s from another season, role or relationship?

Today in the words of the writer of Hebrews, “Strip down, start running—and never quit! No extra spiritual fat, no parasitic sins. Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we’re in. Study how he did it. Because he never lost sight of where he was headed—that exhilarating finish in and with God—he could put up with anything along the way: Cross, shame, whatever. And now he’s there, in the place of honour, right alongside God. When you find yourselves flagging in your faith, go over that story again, item by item, that long litany of hostility he plowed through. That will shoot adrenaline into your souls!” (Hebrews 12:1-2 The Message)

Prayer: Lord I’m giving over everything to you and deleting anything that is not a memorial to you or helpful for me to move forward with. Please help me to fix my eyes on you and who you say I am today. In Jesus name Amen.
