28th May - “Joy That Doesn’t Depend on Circumstances”

I was reading this week from Philippians 4, which happens to be one of my favourite chapters in the Bible, and one verse especially made me stop and think.

“Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again - rejoice!”- Philippians 4:4 (NLT)

And honestly I did wonder about it because it can feel like such a big ask sometimes.

How do we stay full of joy when life feels stretching, disappointing, uncertain, or heavy? When we feel anxious, tired, overwhelmed, sick, or just a little lost?

I think sometimes we read verses like this and assume God is asking us to just be okay all the time. But interestingly, Philippians was written while Paul was stuck in prison; yet here his is, still kept speaking about joy. That tells me joy must come from something deeper than circumstances.

Joy comes from abiding, not circumstances.

Jesus explains this and says in John 15:

“Abide in Me, and I in you… If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.” - John 15:4 (NKJV)

I love that picture of abiding. Staying close, remaining connected and allowing His Word and His promises to live within us.

The byproduct of this sort of closeness with God is trust. And when we trust Him more, fear starts to lose its power.

Not because life suddenly became perfect, but because we remember that God is in control.

Paul then goes on to say:

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank Him for all He has done.”- Philippians 4:6 (NLT)

I think that’s such a key part of this whole idea of joy.

Joy grows where trust lives, and when God's Word abides in us, we begin to truly believe His promises. We stop looking only at what is happening around us and instead start focusing on who God is, what He has said, and the reality of heaven.

Colossians 3 says:

“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”- Colossians 3:2 (NIV)

I think sometimes our joy feels like it disappears because our attention does. We become so focused on pressure, disappointment, fear, uncertainty, and the endless noise around us, that we stop fixing our eyes on Jesus. Instead of trusting him we catch ourselves replaying worries in our minds more than remembering His promises. Then we notice that our peace has started disappearing too.

But the more we remain in Him, and His Word remains in our hearts and minds, the more His peace calms and steadies us.

The more His promises fill our hearts, the less fear gets to control our thinking. Instead of constantly expecting the worst, we begin to carry a quiet confidence that God is good, God is near, and He is working.

Jesus says again in John 15:

“If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.” - John 15:7 (NKJV)

I don’t think that verse is simply about getting things from God. I think it’s about relationship. The closer we stay to Him, the more our hearts begin to align with His heart. We pray differently. We trust differently. We hope differently.

And because His Word is abiding in us, we can ask with confidence, knowing He hears us, loves us, and is faithful to respond according to who He is and the promises In His Word.

The offshoot of that kind of peace is that it creates joy. Not a temporary happiness based on circumstances, but an abiding joy that comes from knowing we are loved, seen and belong to Him.

Action Steps

  • Start your day with even a few quiet moments with God before all the noise rushes in.

  • Hold onto one verse, promise, or thought about God throughout the day.

  • When your mind starts spiralling, pause and gently bring your attention back to His truth.

  • Notice the little “joy moments” - the small reminders that God is near and still working.

  • Talk honestly with God about what’s on your heart instead of trying to carry everything alone. Write it down - it helps.

  • Try to focus a little less on the chaos around you and a little more on His promises.

  • Remember that abiding isn’t about trying harder - it’s about staying close to Jesus and focusing your thoughts and heart throughout the day on Him and what He says.

  • Bring your prayers and needs to God with confidence, knowing He hears you and loves you!

Prayer

Lord, thank you for today. Please help me to keep my heart and mind focused on Your promises today and that when fear, worry, or disappointment try to take over, please remind me that You are still in control.

Teach me to abide in You and your Word daily and to notice all the slivers of joy and and reminders of Your goodness all around me.

Thank you that you are the one who is able to fill my heart with Your peace and a deep abiding joy that comes from knowing You. In Jesus’ name, Amen
