When It Doesn’t Look Good
All day it poured - the thick, humid Queensland kind of rain that makes everything feel heavy. I was sitting in a high-rise apartment, on a mini break - clouds pressed low and talking with one of our daughters on the phone about a situation that had been weighing on her heart.
Mid-conversation, she asked me, “Is God saying anything to you about this?”
And that’s when it happened - a white butterfly fluttered right in front of my tenth-floor window. In the middle of a storm. Back and forth it went across my line of vision..until I noticed it.
I stopped speaking. Because butterflies are one of the ways God gets my attention. They’ve always meant hope, new life, resurrection - signs that something good is about to begin and that God is at work in a situation. In that moment I felt Him whisper, “I’m here. I’m doing something good, even if you can’t see it yet. There is hope here.”
God Is Still Speaking
It was a good reminder that God is always speaking. Through His Word. Through people. Through alignment. Through creation. The question isn’t if He’s speaking - it’s are we listening?
Sometimes His messages aren’t loud - they’re gentle reminders, designed to catch our attention even in the middle of chaos or the busyness of life. A butterfly in the rain. A small moment that breaks the heaviness. A sign He's sees and He cares.
David knew that feeling. While hiding for his life, he wrote:
“I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.” -Psalm 27:13 (NIV)
Everything around him looked bad - but he knew God was good. That’s the key. You don’t have to see goodness all the time to believe it. You just need to know who He is, and that He is good.
How to See His Goodness Again
When you believe God’s goodness and that He is good and cares about you,, you start to notice Him speaking and revealing Himself everywhere.
In small alignments. In timing that feels too perfect to be coincidence. In the peace and His favour that shows up when you least expect it.
"Because no good thing does He withhold from those who walk with Him" (Psalm 84:11 NKJV).
His promises don’t depend on the weather - they depend on His character.
Heaven moves when you believe God is good.
Angels go to work when you trust His promises and declare them to be true (Psalm 103:20 NKJV)
Miracles start in ordinary days - often right in or after the storm.
🌿 Action Steps
- Notice the goodness. Write down three small ways you’ve seen God’s goodness this week - even if it’s been a hard one.
- Expect it. Before bed, say: “God, I’m expecting Your goodness to be working as I sleep and I expect good things in my life tomorrow.”
- Respond. When something feels heavy, pause and ask: “God, what are You saying in this?”
💭 Think and Say
“God’s goodness is chasing me down. Even in the storm, He’s working something beautiful.”
📖 Bible Verses
- “I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.” — Psalm 27:13 (NIV)
- “No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly.” — Psalm 84:11 (ESV)
- “Every good and perfect gift is from above.” — James 1:17 (NIV)
🙏 Prayer
Lord, thank You that Your goodness doesn’t depend on my situation - it’s depends on who You are. Please help me notice even in the small ways You’re moving, even when it’s raining and I can't see anything good happening. Teach me to expect Your promises, trust Your timing, and see the beauty everywhere. I expect good things in my life today. In Jesus name Amen.
