5 Oct – Standing On His Shoulders

As I write this our two sons are at our youngest son’s Isaac’s soccer trials. Our eldest son has just called to say his little bro is doing really well and is standing out as one of the kids who has all the skills. It seems that all that time in the backyard kicking balls with his big brother has paid off today. Essentially Isaac is standing on his big brother’s shoulders right now, as he’s learnt all he knows from him.

Sharing what we know and have to give is always going to benefit and bless the people in our lives. Unfortunately far too often we can underestimate what we carry and therefore miss a lot of opportunities to make someone else’s life better and a little easier by not passing on what we have to give. Our eldest son had to learn and teach himself many of the skills he has recently shared with Isaac, as he came into the game older than many of the other kids his age. It is only by persistent and sheer hard work that he has risen to the level he has. To his credit he now puts the time and effort into encouraging his little brother to play.

As I think of our boys today it reminds me of what Jesus has done for us. He’s like the best big brother you could ever have, as we too can stand on His shoulders and benefit from all that He has done for us. Not only did He set an example on how we can live life to the fullest, He also dealt with and broke the limitations and curse of sin and death so we wouldn’t have to. We don’t have to go through the pain of be punished for all our mess ups and shortcomings. We don’t have to come under the fear of death, sickness and disease. Jesus went through that for us and dealt with it once and for all when He died on the cross and then rose again. Now we get to stand on His shoulders, have an opportunity to live our best life and to go out and do the works He also did and more. (Matthew 12:28)

Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father.” (John 14:12)

Today Jesus and all of heaven is cheering you on to go after your dreams. But He encourages us to imitate Him and to look out for the opportunities God leads you to, so that you can share and impact someone else’s life for good too. You’re not alone however for He’s your big brother who invites you to stand on His shoulders as you seek to fulfill God’s plan for your life. Plus this big brother never beats up on you, but always believes the best of you, sees your potential and if need be will move heaven and earth to keep His promises to you. With a big brother like that in your corner, anything is possible.

Jesus looked at them and said, “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.” (Mark 10:27)

“Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20)

Prayer: Lord thank you that you always have my back and encourage me to go after the dreams in my heart. Help me to make the most of all that you have done for me as i stand on your shoulders and believe for amazing things to happen both in me and through me. Use me today Lord. In Jesus name Amen.
