I have a cup that a friend gave me that I love. It reminds me to be creative because the cup has artwork from a famous artist displayed on it, and I also use it as an extra prompt to pray for the friend who gave it to me.
Reminders are important in life because we can all get so busy with the world clamouring for our attention we can let the important relationships and disciplines we actually do value and desire to have in our lives slip if we are not careful.
Things like checking in with Jesus daily, prayer, giving thanks, taking time with those around us, pausing for a moment to gather our thoughts, exercising; the list goes on of the little reminders in our day that we benefit from having in place.
Reminders are commonplace in the bible, and Jesus Himself observed and celebrated the festivals and dates on the Jewish calendar. There were specific times to pray, to celebrate a season and things that God had done in the past that He wanted people to remember. God also instructed His people to place reminders to remember Him and His promises on their clothing and homes to remind them of His Word, specific events and how to live their best life with Him. (Deuteronomy 6:6-9)
Today I encourage you to place some positive reminders in your world and daily life. One of the easiest is communion which Jesus said to take regularly as a reminder to take hold of all He has done for us and to be united in Him. When we mess up and fall short we can come to Jesus and be cleansed and made whole. It's a reminder to remember Him and who we are in him as we take communion (you can take it daily). (Luke 22:19-20)
I encourage you to put little reminders in your day to connect with Jesus and who He says you are. You can have a reminder to pray (like my cup), or to pause and give thanks, gather your thoughts, and remember to value and support those who are important to you and who God has placed on your heart.
Next time God does something significant, make a note of it somewhere. Then whenever you face a circumstance or need a reminder that God is for you and you can trust him, it will be right there as a testimony that God is faithful to his promises.
Plus, when it comes to being remembered, Jesus and all of the heaven remember and know all about you. When you invite Him to be part of your life, you are adopted into His family, and your name is engraved on the palm of his hand. (Isaiah 49:16) Ephesians 1:5 Every thought you have and every move you make He is watching over you, working to cause all things to work together for you good. (Romans 8:28)
“You have searched me, LORD, and you know me.
You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.
You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.
Before a word is on my tongue you, LORD, know it completely.
I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful; I know that full well.” (Psalm 139:1-14)
Prayer: Lord, thank you for remembering me and that my name is written on your hand and heart. Would you please help me remember what’s valuable every day and make time for those people and important things that are part of your plan for my life. Most of all, I want to remember you and all that you have done for me. In Jesus name Amen.
