25 Jan No Free Rent In My Mind

Updated: Jan 29, 2024

What controls and dominates your thinking, usually controls your life.

“Proverbs 23:7 in the Bible says, “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he.”

Our ability to learn, think, choose, and reason is one of the core components of what makes us human as our thoughts become a reflection of who we are.

The good news is that even though you can't always protect yourself from hearing certain things or stop negative thoughts from coming, you don’t have to keep thinking about them when they do try to gain your attention.

One way of determining what controls your life is deciding if a thought or situation is negative and brings in worry or fear and choosing to eliminate those you don’t want to enter the door of your life. You get to choose whether to dwell with them or not.

The Bible talks a lot about keeping a watch on the direction of our thoughts and the importance of guarding our minds and hearts. (Proverbs 4:23; Col 3:2) Practically speaking that means being selective in what you allow in, rather than sitting back and allowing negative, fearful, intimidating, and unproductive thoughts and subsequently attitudes and actions access.

As Taylor Swift says, why are you allowing these, “free rent in your mind."

Instead of allowing unwelcome guests, I encourage you to start paying attention to what you're allowing to dwell in your mind and heart and then refuse to give any nasties free rent any longer as you instead make room for what you do want to have as part of your life.

What you give space to is what has control and reflects who you will become.

“Keep your thoughts continually fixed on all that is authentic, honorable and admirable, beautiful and respectful, pure and holy, merciful and kind. And fasten your thoughts on every glorious work of God, praising him always.” (Philippians 4:8 TPT)

Prayer: Lord, please help me to be more aware of the things that have residence in my life and to replace these with things I want to think and become today. Thank you that I can be transformed as I renew my mind with your truth. In Jesus' name Amen.
