1 Dec – What To Do With Bad News

I had some bad news this week in that even after 6 weeks the bones in my collarbone are still completely broken and haven’t healed as they should have.

As with all bad news I had a choice right there in the surgeons office. I could get discouraged at the negative medical report or I could lean into Jesus and His promises.

I know from experience that when we receive bad or disappointing news that it’s really important to filter it through what God says about our lives, and to remind ourselves of all the great things He has done. It’s one of the ways we can lift our eyes off the bad news and onto Jesus who is bigger than our circumstances.

As we do this the power of any bad news diminishes and we are more able to place our faith and trust in God and His ability to bring deliverance out of every circumstance.

“Bless the Lord O my soul and forget not all His benefits. For he forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion. He satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” (Psalm 103: 1-5)

God doesn’t want us to be constantly immobilised by our circumstances, and whatever is going on around us. Bad news, especially if you look for it is everywhere, but so is God and He is always working behind the scenes to counteract any bad news we may receive.

Today be encouraged if you have had some disappointing or bad news and choose to:

  1. Not sit around worrying and speaking all the negatives and fear filled thoughts. (That’s doing the devil’s job for him). Instead put all your concerns into God’s very capable hands. He’s got this.

“Cast all your worries upon him because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7)

“I raise my eyes toward the mountains. From whence shall come my help? My help comes from the LORD, the maker of heaven and earth.” (Psalm 121:1-2)

2. Find a promise in God’s Word relating to your issue and need.

Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. (Hebrews 10:23)

“Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.” (2 Peter 1:4)

3. Start praying and declaring your desired outcome, and that God is working all things together for your good.

“Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)

“We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

Take heart your breakthrough is on the way.

Prayer: Lord thank you that regardless of any bad news I may receive you are bigger than my circumstances and more powerful than any problem. I choose to trust in your promises and to lean on your goodness today. In Jesus name Amen.
