Today I received something I haven’t had for a very long time….my own room. Now when you are married, have had six children, home school, pastor and work from wherever you can find a vacant table or desk, then having your own space, let alone a room is a feat and something to be celebrated. It’s a purposeful looking to find the upside of another of our children growing up and leaving home, and one of those transitional moments in life.
My new “me space” is for art and creativity, writing, pastoring and work as a manager, plus just having some time and space.
However as great as my new space is, it would actually be of no benefit to me unless I found space inside myself to know who I am, what I am about and discover with God’s help how to make the most of my room. Without being purposeful about what I want my “me space” for it would simply be another room in my house. Unless I choose to focus, quiet myself, reflect and be diligent about the tasks in front of me I could have as much space as I want and yet not see any difference in my life.
I could walk past and look at my room but never use it, or sit in it and yet not paint, write, pray, or work in it. I could come and sit in it and yet still find life stressful, instead of taking time to relax and enjoy it.
I guess unless we can be joyful, content with what we have and who we are and becoming right now, then a room of our own, a fancier house, car, holiday, job, amazing relationship and all the things we work for, wait for, pray and dream about aren’t going to make a lasting difference.
But when we do discover and make the most of what we have already, God seems to honour that attitude and blesses us. It may take a while, but He sees and He knows the desires of our heart and He never forgets us.
Today whatever space you have or are in I encourage you to cultivate an attitude of thankfulness and to trust God to bless you with the desires and requests of your heart. He hears and He sees and hasn’t forgotten about you.
“Delight yourself also in the Lord and He shall give you the desires of your heart.” (Psalm 37:4)
Prayer: Lord thank you that even the little things in my life are important to you and that you see me. I trust you with my life today. In Jesus name Amen.
