19th Mar - God Is a “More Than Enough” Kind of God (A Story I’ll Never Forget)

One of my favourite things to come back to are what I call “memorials.”

Moments where God has clearly shown up.

The Bible talks about these sort of "memorials" when God brought the Israelites through the Jordan River. He told them to stack stones as a reminder, so that every time they walked past, they would remember.

And when their children asked, “What do these stones mean? ”they could tell the story again.

I think we all need those kinds of reminders.

And one of mine comes from a night I’ll never forget.

When we were first married, money was really tight. At the end of each pay week, we’d often be down to eating two-minute noodles for a few days.

One night, my husband prayed and thanked God for the noodles again.

But then, laughing, he added:

“Lord… it would also be really great to have a lamb roast dinner.”

A few minutes later…

There was a knock at the door.

We opened it - and there stood our pastor’s wife, holding a box.

Inside were two full lamb roast dinners with all the trimmings… and two more for the next night.

We sat there eating, looking at each other and very grateful, and then after finishing - my husband said (half joking, half hopeful):

“Lord… that was amazing. But what would be really great now… would be one of my favourite desserts - apple crumble, with custard and cream on top.”

Then…

Another knock.

We opened the door.

And there she was again.

Holding plates of apple crumble, custard, and cream. Two for that night… and two for the next.

It happened there'd been a church board dinner next door, and some people hadn’t come and there was extra meals.

But for us, that night has become a memorial that we come back to again and again.

Because we learnt something we’ve never forgotten:

God sees us, and He cares about the details. He provides and is a more than enough kind of God. Actually we learnt first hand He's a"roast dinner, with all the trimmings" kind of God :)

These are the stories we hold onto; write down, tell again, and share with our kids and others.

Because when life feels a little uncertain, overwhelming, our prayers feel like they're going unanswered and doubt starts to creep in…those and other like it, are the memorials, that we use to stir our faith and encourage ourselves to believe and keep on believing.

They remind us God is still the same; He is faithful and He hasn’t changed. He's the same yesterday, today and forever. (Heb 13:8) He loves for us to ask so that He can do superabundantly and extravagently more!

Whatever you are facing today I encourage you to read the testimonies in the bible of where God shown up and showed himself strong on behalf of people and also start to write down your own "stories/memorials" so you can remember and stir your own faith to believe again.

Action Steps

• Write down a time where God clearly provided or revealed Himself to you.

• Share it with someone - your kids, a friend, or family member.

• Start your own “memorial list in a book/journal” - stories you can come back to when you need to stir up your faith and trust.

Bible Verses

Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.”- Romans 10:17 NLT

Now to Him who is able to carry out His purpose and do superabundantly more than all that we dare ask or think [infinitely beyond our greatest prayers, hopes, or dreams], according to His power that is at work within us…”— Ephesians 3:20 (AMP)

“When your children ask… ‘What do these stones mean?’ tell them…”- Joshua 4:6 (NLT)

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the times You have revealed and shown yourself strong in my life. Please help me not to forget, but to remember, to share, and to hold onto those stories and testimonies so I can share them with others. I want to remember so that my own faith is strengthened and stirred up to believe again. In Jesus' name Amen.
