3 Oct – Don’t Be Afraid To Make A Mistake

Paint pouring or flow art is a technique where you allow the paint to do what it wants while you gently direct it to flow across the canvas. As I’ve instructed people in this technique in my paint pouring classes I have discovered that many are hesitant because they are don’t want to make a mistake or it not to work out as they visualised or planned.

At first, people can dislike how the colours have mixed together on the canvas. However, I always encourage them to stay with the process and that the painting will change if they move the paint by tilting the canvas a different way. They soon discover that the whole picture will alter as the colours merge and come to life. Plus when they relax and choose to enjoy the process they are usually really pleased with what they create.

With paint pouring, as with many things in life what you first see can rapidly change as you make a different move, trust yourself and just let what is meant to happen happen. Yet to do that you have to get over the fear of making a mess or mistake and just get your hands and heart completely involved.

As I paint and also contemplate life I’m discovering more and more what a liberating and wonderful gift it is to give ourselves the freedom to make a so-called mistake or mess, and how we can learn to trust God in the process.

All the well-known explorers, artists, and forerunners have had to face the fear of failure, disappointment, and the pain of perhaps making a mistake. But they chose to risk it because the regret of not trying was worse than the pain of making a mistake. Some of the greatest inventions, discoveries and works of art and music are a result of being prepared to step out and risk a little to achieve an outcome.

I believe God wants you to know and experience freedom. He doesn’t want you limited by the fear of regret or failure and promises to give you wisdom and to guide and help you as you ask. If you do happen to make a mistake, He promises to be there to prevent you from totally falling and to bring all things together for your good.

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you“. (James 1:5)

The LORD supports everyone who falls and raises up those who are bowed down. (Psalm 145:14)

Whatever you have been procrastinating about because you were concerned about the mess you might make, I encourage you to take a step of faith and to risk a little. Don’t let the fear of making a mistake hold you back, because beautiful things happen when you choose to trust both God and yourself and to go for it.

Prayer: Lord thank you that you give me wisdom and the space to learn and grow. Please help me to live free from the fear of making a mistake or a mess and give me the courage to be all you have made me to be. I want to really live – with no regrets! In Jesus name. Amen
